I reluctantly bought the ATD next based on good reviews and what looked to be a good design in the pictures.Unfortunately, I didn't realize the ATD is only a rotary and not dual-action (orbital). And that's about it. One is a 7 inch Velcro pad which simply screws on. The price is nice and the tool has worked well the first few times I've used it. Well there is a little assembly required actually, as the handles have to be attached. And then there are 2 disc plates. I initially bought the Porter Cable, but sent it back as it makes an awful lot of noise. But there is no carrying case, no instructions (other than a safety booklet), no nothing.And that's probably OK.
The wool bonnet can only do so much. Well there are 2 replacement brushes for the motor (which I'm sure to lose before I need them). I would take a look at the Meguiars Dual Action Complete Kit which includes a dual action polisher and a few pads to get you started. The 2nd plate comes with a wool bonnet attached as pictured. This probably explains the price difference from the PC as the quality here seems to be at least as good.There are a few other things you should know that are not explained elsewhere -- like what comes in the box. I would recommend one other consideration though.
It accepts the 8 inch Meguiar's pads, but not the new 2.0 pads which need a 6 inch plate like the PC. It's a little trickier to install, but not too bad with the supplied wrench. You are going to need to buy pads for this thing. Sadly I didn't see it online until after I had used the ATD a few times, but next time.
Pro's: Does everything you need at a fraction of the price of DeWalt or other various polishers. Another major Con instead of telling you RPM's on the dial which is pretty standard the dial reads 1 2 3 4 so its hard to know exactly what speed your at, wish they had followed their competition on speed selection. Well after hours of working with it, your arm will become like a noodle.
Con's: IT'S HEAVY. Plan on purchasing a Meguiars or a 3M backing plate to pair with this polisher. Secondly, it seems very heavy duty, I expect to use this machine for years.
Secondly, the two backing plates that come standard with it are worthless, throw them away. NEARLY 10lbs. Ok so your saying to yourself that doesn't sound so bad right.
I went with Meguiars W68 backing plate but the W66 would be an equally good choice. Bottom Line: For the price you can overlook every Con.
This review format is very cumbersome. Only used once (need more time) but works like a charm. polished my car with it and it looked new again.
I got this polisher last week and start using it in the pass weekend. The product is great, it's even better when i put in a makita pad, I used it with meguire's rubbing compound 84 -> 80 -> 9 and already had turn my car's surface like a mirror. It did a excelent job and i'll recommend to anyone who's thinking of buying it
